Only half kidding...I had a roomate that was big in to surfing and he was always telling me about the locals this and locals that in terms of surfing territory.

Localism occurs, but only at specific breaks....usually the best ones.

People that would be surfing there, by and large, would belong there anyway.

There is no localism at "barney" or "insect" breaks because the waves are not great anyway.

In all my time, I have only come across localism once...and it was in Hawaii....and in retro, we should not have been there anway. We left pretty quickly.

Exactly, and it happens in all surfing regions, not just Santa Cruz.

Also, if you act like a kook in just about ANY half-way decent break, you're going to get ripped on, and in some cases assaulted.
