Well, thanks everyone for your advice. I actually found an 18" bike at Walmart. I didn't even know they made that size. The 20" bikes looked huge and the 16" bikes looked tiny, but the 18" seemed just right. (Sheesh, I sound like Goldilocks.)

I am now recovering from a highly successful pirate party and looking forward to tomorrow (the real birthday) when he sees his bike.

i thought you were going to tell him he had to save his allowance to get a bike. and after he had a jar full of coins you'd would have a softening of the heart and buy it for him.
