Default National Lampoon's Vacation

First I should admit a bias: Harold Ramis is one of the few comedy directors of the last 25 years that I consistently like.

Now that that's out of the way. What is it about National Lampoon's Vacation (the original) that works so well? Chevy Chase is fantastic in this film, a fact that is all the more damning when one examines much of his other film work. Beverly D'angelo is great.

The electric bed that won't stop...

Cousin Eddie & Co....

The leash dragging behind the car...

The funeral service for Aunt Edna...

The scene with Chase and Brinkley just before they go for the swim...

Chase punching Marty Moose...

I'm watching this film when I get home

One of the great comedies of all time. It's one of the few movies that I can almost quote by heart. I think it worked so well because they in essence "nailed" the American family vacation experience. Sure, it was exaggerated, but the framework of every middle class summer vacation was there.

Yes, indeed. A classic of American cinema.

And the "Christmas Vacation" version is a homeboy-family favorite. We can quote most lines from both movies.

I think that you said it right in the beginning - Chevy Chase. He was/is fantastic in almost everything that he does. I think that the Fletch series is right behind the Vacation series in laughability.

When I was at BYU, CV came to the Varsity Theater. I saw it three times in one week with a girl I was dating at the time. She said that she just thought that the movie was ok but she was waaaaay more entertained by listening to me laugh like a hyenia the whole time.
