On the subject of Bateman, I don't understand the passion that comes from non-BYU football fans.
For football fans, it was his management style and the argument over how that affected the football program. What does that have to do with becoming an apostle. If you truly want BYU to be an accpeted academic institution and thought of in a different light than Bob Jones University, the people you have to blame are those giving the President of BYU direction, not the guy doing what he is told to do. If you accept what BYU is, I think you have to say he was a good President. He would probably make a good apostle as well. |

SU, if you and I were ever in the same room, it would be something akin to this:

I have often said to people, if that is where the (insert word) are going, I hope that isn't where I am going. I never thought I said anything funny. |

Better, no question. He was very personable and related well to the youth. I never saw him as a heavy handed kind of leader as far as church goes. And by the time he was president of BYU I wasn't there anymore, so I have no idea. It does seem like something was definitely amiss in the way the athletic dept., ran.

If I am ever made GA/BYU president, I will throw around my GA status at every opportunity. Any disagreement with me is akin to disagreeing with God Himself.

There would certainly be that temptation. Think of all the members who graduated with an A in Seminary and now they think any disagreement with them is akin to disagreeing with God.
