They're both fruit. ESPN chose to eat the WNBA's apple and rejected BYU's orange. Contrary to your speculation, America's Sport's Leader has found that the WNBA deliver's higher ratings.

I agree with this post. I'm no fan of the WNBA, but I do agree that the size of BYU's national fan base is mythical.
