Wine recomendations....
I'm at a meeting right now, and a colleague of mine did me a big favor and I'd like to give him something nice. His admin tells me that he enjoys wine, so I thought I would send him a bottle of wine. Is there a protocol in these things (like the color of a rose has meaning) ?

yes, there is a protocol. If you send him wine in in a carton, that says "I hate you."

Well, most guys aren't white wine afficianados. It's cheaper often and considered girly.
I would start with a carbernet sauvignon or a merlot. Most wine lovers seem to have favorites among those two. Napa Valley has many good winer makers. Ask the local wine distributor for a good bottle and year.

Brian, what you want to do is pick out something that your colleague might not normally choose for himself.
If it were me, for example, choosing a wine for, say, the husband's parents, I'd go with one of the better reds from an Oklahoma winery. They're never going to run into an Oklahoma wine in Montana, so it's a nice change from the ordinary. In your case, I'd decide on a price range (You could spend $7 or $70. Or $700 if you contact the right dealers), then ask a reputable wine seller for recommendations. I agree with Archaea's suggestion that you consider a cab or a merlot. Seattle recently recommended a good one, although a little low-cost for a gift. |

I hear Pakistani wines are quite nice.
