BYU vs. Texas
tough to see the boys put it on the line like that, giving their all, only for their coaches not to believe in them and let them down with a horrible game plan in the 2nd half. Very frustrating.
But that's Bronco. The creativity of a rock. |

Doman's playcalling showed a complete lack of confidence in Jake. Draw play on 3rd and 9, are you kidding me? We're really hurting in the backfield.

also, Bronco's defensive strategy of not committing to stop the run, not taking chances blitzing against inexperienced QBs....it was exactly what we would predict of him. Bend but don't break, don't give up the big play. But it was the wrong call. He is so frustratingly predictable and conservative and stubborn.

you know, I could break this game down in detail, but I don't feel like it.
We are in the position of having better football players than coaching. I do give Bronco et al. credit for the good players. But the game-planning sucks big time on both sides of the ball. And here we are, another year without a decent running back. |

We knew last year we didn't have a running back, so it is frustrating that Bronco failed to bring in a JC running back. It's also frustrating Bronco ran off Drew Phillips.
BYU's playcalling was abysmal, its execution almost as bad. Heaps is not rolling through his progressions but is locking in on one receiver. We have no dependable running back. Overall, it's been a dismal offensive season and an unfortunate defensive season.

Alabama kid DID make the grades but for reasons unclear, Bronco just gave up on him. According to his family, Dupaix had confirmed said player was in good standing for fall. But Bronco's reasons have not been explained to the family, maybe to the player, nor to Dupaix.
So it is untrue he didn't make the grades as his summer school yielded straight A's. Bronco may have a reason why didn't renew the scholarship, but we don't know why. It wasn't grades and now we're hurting. So except for internal, not school related issues, BYU would have had a break away, speedy back. It is partially Bronco's problem for dismissing a remedy to cure the malady that ails us.

I've had discussions with a family member, who seems forthright enough. There may be a reason why Bronco gave up, but it hasn't been disclosed to anybody speaking. The only given reason is completely ambiguous. Ultimately, Bronco and staff wanted the individual to come to BYU, pay for his expenses, not play but just hang around school and the football team. This was not clear to the family.
So I have some speculation but in this case, Bronco may have goofed. And the loss of this player has nothing to do with honor code, grades or anything else, but team expectations and perhaps a missed judgment of the commitment of a player. I wish Bronco had gone the extra mile. We didn't gain anything by him releasing the scholarship and he should have tried as the kid was already invested and he is a special talent. Again, Bronco won't always get it right.
