Default jazz is good

I am sitting here in a jazz club in Oakland (CA; Yoshis, if any of you know the place) listening to my kid's jazz band go through a sound check preparing for a couple of sets tonight. My son is lead alto. This is his last year before college. It will be a fun show but is also another milepost on the road to his departure and maturation, which is good, but bittersweet in a way. Parenting is sort of difficult in many ways that I never really expected when this whole thing started.
