Maybe that is the reason. I won't ever know the answer, but if it is the reason I find it a bit disappointing. The church of all institutions should be the leader on such a fundamental issue.

There were many churches that favored equal rights, and I am unaware of any of them ceasing to exist as a result of their support.
Again, it's only a hypothetical.

More to the point, it illustrates how unknowable these things are. Thus, vigorous arguments for one specific theory, especially one that casts the prophets and membership as disobedient rubes, are sadly misplaced.
