Oh, I get your point. I just think you're mis-using the term 'straw man'. In fact, your argument is a straw man itself, which highlights the irony.

We say "there is no league-wide conspiracy". You say "the unjust influence of a referee - even though not part of a league-wide conspiracy - is really bad." You're misrepresenting my position as being that referee's betting on games & trying to throw them to make some cash isn't a bad thing. In fact, that's an entirely different argument.


Again, I'll restate my argument here: A league-wide conspiracy involving a "mastermind" (who may or may not be the Commissioner) and at least one team of officials, affecting the outcome of any single game, is extremely unlikely.
