Sin-- to miss the mark.
Somebody asked me about this the other day, and I found the following after a bit of research. The Greek word in the New Testament ἁμαρτία (amartia) means "to miss the mark"-- which word we translate as "to sin." Whoever it was that asked, hope that helps.

Missing the mark sounds nicer than sin.

That's good to know. So if missing the mark is sinning, then it means that kickers are the probably biggest sinners on a football team. If our kicker wouldn't have sinned against Arizona and Boston College, BYU would have been undefeated last season. (Weak, I know).

Had Kanishiro not sinned the Utes would have had won that game in RES. Had Payne not sinned against BSU, BYU would have had a .500 season.
