Default M. Russell Ballard on the Sabbath

http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_5947994

Sharpton arrived in Salt Lake City Sunday evening and was greeted at the Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City by LDS apostle M. Russell Ballard. The two men chatted for two hours over dinner, discussing areas of shared concerns and places where their respective faiths can work together.

Funniest quote from the article:

"Outside the Family History library, a black heckler yelled as the New York City minister entered the building: "They've snowed you. They're all racists."

I just got off the phone with my Mom. She and Dad are serving a mission at the Family History Library and they were a few of those who explained to the good Reverend about the goings on there at the library.

Mom said that he was a very gracious person and nothing like he seems to be when he's in front of a tv camera.

I had to ask my Mom if Dad was wearing the "Orrin Hatch for Senate" tie pin that he always wears and if Sharpton noticed. She said that if he did, he didn't say anything.

Did they have to go to Chicago to find a black LDS member to escort Sharpton around town? Utah is white, but THAT white?
Perhaps not many former RS presidents in Utah and perhaps those other members didn't want to take the time.

I'm not sure if it is funny or sad. Of course, this is one problem when you don't have a single black general authority based out of SLC.

I'm a little confused by the phrasing of that sentence. Does that mean she used to live in Chicago (where she served as a RS president) or that she still does?

Since we know that can't be God's fault, it must be ....

She lives in Chicago unless she moved in the last couple of years (She was in the Hyde Park Ward when I lived there). She is a wonderful person, and this is not really an unusual role in some sense for her (although the specifics of the situation clearly are).

I knew Cathy Stokes when I was on my mission - she's a spark plug - very nice lady. I can see her being a good liason with Sharpton.

She probably has more experience dealing with self-aggrandizing black preacher demagogues.

Maybe the most experienced in PR for the Church with AAs. So they pulled their most experienced person. Actually that's impressive that they went that far.
