How on earth did he submit a paper without mentorship? He paid for the materials himself? He must have had a mentor who provided the materials. I agree with Mike--this is a huge embarrassment for BYU.
I had the same mentor as this kid at BYU, and I can't imagine that the mentor would have knowingly allowed a student to submit a paper as sole author. I just looked at the paper. It's a stinking review! No materials necessary--just expertise (which he lacked). That's hilarious. And BYU is calling it a "study" even though it's a stupid review. It was a review article, apparently, therefore not original research.
Science is a team sport, and either the guy is not a team player (which is bad) or he didn't have the opportunity to work with anyone (also bad). |

Yeah, I've seen lots of reviews written by students, but the mentor's name is always included, at least to provide some credibility.
