Do you have a close friend or family member who is homosexual?
I'm trying to get an informal feel for how person's view on homosexuality is affected by their relationships with homosexuals. I believe that those of us who have close friends/family who are gay are more sympathetic to those issues than those who do not. Votes are private.

Both...close friend (and roommate at BYU for years) as well as cousin.

I was in a threesome in the MTC. I've since found out that both these companions are gay (one went home early, soon after arriving in Japan, the other came out at grad school--the U... what am I to make of that? ).
I was in the mission office with another companion and later BYU roommate who is gay. The other elder in the office was what you would stereotypically think was gay, so with what I know now, I wonder... I feel really naive. All this around me and all I could think about was myself and how to be a decent missionary. Didn't even see it. When I first found out about the one MTC companion last year, I thought about him EVERY day for about four months. Since then I have thought about him probably weekly. I have read tons about the issue since then. I am still trying to formulate a coherent thought around this. This missionary was the most Christ-like person I have ever met. Today he does advocacy for battered wives. He has done an incredible amount of good. On one hand, I wish that I could be more like him. On the other hand... |

My earliest experience with a gay person was with a spouse of a sibling who left the marriage after a few kids. It was a very painful experience for our family. So for a long time, my feelings toward homosexuals were particularly negative. Although recently, I have come to befriend a co-worker who is gay and find this person to be one of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met. We have this couple to our home for dinner on a regular basis.
My views on homosexuality, gay marriage, adoption, etc. have dramatically changed as a result. I wonder if people in the 50s and 60s felt this way when they befriended African Americans and realized that we're all alike.

Not exactly the threesome I've dreamt of, but to each his own I guess.
