Default Are we harder on our own then other religions?

We seem to judge fellow members pretty harshly. Is this common amongst all religions or are we alone in this problem and why?

When these questions are asked I always think, who is meant by we. I saw a post the other day on CB where the poster said "my church" and then went on to rip another poster on his stance. "My church"????? I didn't know someone on CB had their own church. You have posters such as Mr P and you who seem to believe they have some ability to judge others.

However, I think the vast majority of "we" are just trying to do the best we can and pulling for the other members of the church. I think we even pull for the "my crap don't stink" group, just wish they would work on their own salvation a little more diligently and let the rest of us work on ours.

I don't know if LDS are harder on "their own," but I do know that LDS tend to identify more strongly with fellow members than other religions do. For instance, in the world of sports, LDS tend to root for other LDS, even if it transcends normal team rivalries or (in Olympic competition) national boundaries. Maybe that stronger identity raises expectations.

I think you meant to say that most LDS root for LDS non-Ute athletes.

Yeah - I forgot about the U-LDS thing, but I was thinking more Olympics. The Ensign publishes a list of Mormon Olympians every time the Olympics comes around (summer or winter) and the Deseret News has declared Rulon Gardener an "adopted Utahn" - more for his LDS ties than geographic ones.

Do other religions excommunicate or disfellowship as many members as we do?

I don't know what the statistics are, but I don't think we excommunicate that many now days.

It seems to me the the church was a lot tougher 20 years ago, for sure it was 40-60 years ago.

We are becoming a little like the Catholics. Dress codes for the higher ups, but a more tolerant attitude to the body in general.

I am amazed how many excommunications there were back in the 19th century. Especially after the saints moved to Utah. Question BY or any of the local leaders in any degree, and you were out on the street. But they let them back in pretty easily in most cases. Or they agreed posthumously to call it a mistake and forgive the person in question, restoring all temple blessings, etc. That happened to one of my ancestors.
