In most hillside communities in CA you are required, by law, to cut brush back from your house and other buildings as a fire line. I wonder how many of these properties followed the guidlines - don't know. But why must we always assign blame when disaster strikes? I don't see this kind of bitching when a tornado razes a town from the map in the Midwest. Why not relocate everyone in the Plain States too? |

The only reason is that so many CBers were so critical of New Orleans.

But I do think there is a significant difference. Many of the San Diego homes that have burned, were probably built in the last, what, 30 years. And I'm probably being very generous with that estimate.
Whereas New Orleans existed below sea level before any of us were born. In other words, New Orleans is the product of inertia. Building on gasoline is a product of more recent stupidity. I wonder how many people with burned out homes ever for a moment suspected it could happen to them. I'm a pretty risk-conscious person, as that is what I do for a living--weigh risk. I'm the kind of person that drives by a row of houses next to a creek, and just shake my head. |

He could also be a pavlovian dog that was trained to shake his head when driving by creeks.
