Is it appropriate for BYU vs. TCU to be a stake youth activity?
The stake will use tithing funds to pay for tickets for all youth in our stake to attend the game. This would be the 2nd or 3rd year in a row.

Well, it IS the Lord's University.

Our ward just took the entire youth group to BYU vs. TCU in Provo a couple of weeks ago (I think BYU offered some kind of deal on group tickets because I saw a lot of youth groups there that night). There were plenty of Ute fans and non-fans (both adults and youth) in our ward that participated and none of them raised a stink. At its base level, sports is entertainment and I don't think it makes a difference if you spend it on mini-golf, bowling, or going to see basketball game.

Setting aside the discussion of whether activities are supposed to have some redeeming spiritual value (spare me the football/religion jokes), I have a problem with using church funds for it, yes. If the leaders absolutely want to go, fine, but have the kids/parents pay for it themselves.

Church funds are sparse as it is (though we pump a large portion of it into the youth), and I think there are better things to spend it on. It's not as though a $3 ticket (according to Leb) is a huge hardship, though in most cases the ticket price is much more.
I am not anyone's bishop, but why not explain why you disagree.

Just a thought but Mike's stake is one where there are an awful lot of kids who are not even college-bound, much less chuch-school where they are infinitley more likely to end up in a temple marriage. Perhaps this is an "it depends" situation and the SP feels like if even one kid is inspired to go to BYU from this experience, it's worth it.
