Babel is Crash 2006.
When I first saw the trailer for Babel I was really excited to see it. Then with all the buzz it was receiving with the awards and nominations I decided to catch it with a friend last night.
I wished I had saved my $7.50. It was long, slow, and was nothing more than Crash with a single event bringing several people together from around the world. I thought that the movie, as it's title and trailer suggests, would concern itself more with the inability to communicate because of language. But really the only part of that came through was with a high school aged Japanese girl who is deaf. I was not impressed at all with this movie. And on another note, I saw this movie at Trolley Square, the only theater in SLC that was showing Babel. This will be the last movie I ever see there. I swear there was a geriatric convention there. The average age in the theater was probably 70. I thought cell phones going off were annoying, but they are nothing compared to two senior couples talking through the entire movie. This one husband had to explain to his wife the entire movie. I was ready to hurl my soda at them.

Crash was the most overated movie of 05'.
Manipulative garbage from beginning to end.

Crash was intentionally manipulative, so that's hardly a critique. I personally thought it was among the very best movies in its year, so I guess we disagree.

Actually it's a great critique. If you like being manipulated, whatever works for you I guess.

It was a great movie that took on a tough subject and had very compelling performances. It was designed intentionally to draw out emotions and never tried to hide that fact. It was as overt as can be, hardly the definition of "manipulative" unless you have a habit of calling any movie that elicits emotions 'manipulative.' Thus your critique IS silly, IMHO. Agree to disagree, I guess.

Somehow the thought of someone with the moniker "Rocky Balboa" bagging on a movie for being manipulative strikes me as highly ironic.
