We are trying to plan a non-official campout
in my ward for families with young kids.
My friend who is planning it with me says let's make it an Elders Quorum thing. I said no, bad idea, because if it is an official activity then it falls under official budget guidelines and no one can pay any money for it, and gets all kinds of scrutiny, requires approval from the Bishopric, would suck up the entire year's EQ budget. At that point, it doesn't happen. Interesting church we are in, isn't it. Where to do something like this, you are better off doing it unofficially. The amount of fellowship and number of activities that DON'T TAKE PLACE because of our policies and bureaucracies must be staggeringly large. It's up to some of us to do it on our own, while trying to be as least clique-ish as possible. |

How is an un-official campout different from just inviting people to go camping with you?

In RS now (at least in my ward), what used to be "homemaking meeting" is now just a collection of interest groups. I'm not sure who determined them or what, but there are several. In fact, at some point they asked me to be in charge of them, which I do. Every other month, I let people know what we will be doing, and I invite everybody. Usually 5-10 people show up. It's not my calling, and no one has ever told me what I can and can't do. Whoever comes to the event each time helps me decide what we will do next. I rather like it.
And I mentioned in passing that I am now also the ward party planner. I've heard rumors of a few rules and regulations about that, but no one has ever given me any official guidance. Just a sad little budget. |
