One of the most memorable plays from my childhood
watching BYU. This was an ESPN game when I was a kid. BYU vs. New Mexico. NM is punting. The BYU guy runs towards the line, jumps over the offensive lineman, takes a few steps into the backfield, turns around, and jumps back over the offensive lineman. Ball is snapped. No flag. LOL. These days that would be encroachment I think.
Anyone remember that? |

I vaguely remember a game against Hawaii when the d-lineman jumped over the line to pull the runningback down, saving the game.

Kyle Morrell, safety, jumped over and stopped Raphel Cherry, saving a 18-13 victory for BYU in 1984 and by extension, the national championship.

"vaguely"? Holy cow, that is one of the biggest plays in BYU history. It was beautiful. I think it made the ESPN top ten plays of the year list.

I was in my first year of law school.
And there was a short time publication which focused solely upon college football that year. It allowed me before the internet to follow BYU's glorious ascendancy to football immortality. Watching team after team fall by the wayside. Back then, Nebraska losing to Kansas or Syracuse was a big deal. It was the worst grades I received during law school, but I didn't care. I remember Dean Hawkins making two hilarious statements, at least for him. First, he stated, "if you had told me when President Kimball hired me that BYU and Michigan would be in a bowl game together, I'd told you that you were crazy. And if you had told me, BYU would be favored, I would have known you were crazy. But not as crazy as if you had told me, we'd be wearing two piece garments. But that's an improvement I'm willing to live with." It was a glorious time to be a BYU fan, one which I fear no other generation will ever relish.

The most memorable play from my childhood was the halfback option play in the 83 Holiday Bowl. Stinnett passes to Young who high steps it into the endzone. For the next year or so, every recess football game would include a couple of halfback options.
