Christmas parties
So I get this evite from my mentor's secretary for a christmas party. That's fine, but I was scheduled to work at my second job. So I got out of that commitment. Of course, the ward Christmas party is scheduled the same night. No problem, skip that. Mentor's party invite says no kids. Slight problem, never have used a baby sitter before. My parents agree to come into town and babysit (good luck getting a member to do it on ward christmas party night). Of course my parents are skipping my dad's work party to do so. And then I find out my residency/department christmas party is on the same night. This is a big deal for me because we do a faculty roast movie, which is always a lot of fun.
Argh! Order of importance: 1. mentor - he may determine what job I have next summer 2. colleagues - lots of fun, memories, my last time, and I have a bit part in the movie 3. ward party - not going to miss much here. another cultural hall special. So my plan is go to #1, with vague, dim hopes of maybe slipping out (unlikely) for #2. I've never had this problem before. |

I've never been a fan of Christmas parties...
in fact, I've never gone to a work Christmas party ever. My reasoning: I spend 40 hours each week with these people because I have to; I don't want to waste my time away from work with them.
Of course, it should be noted that I'm not much of a Christmas person. If I had the choice, I'd just rather not have anything to do with it. Bah, humbug!

Politics means something to you when it pays the bills.

My opinion..
if one's boss is willing to throw a wrench into one's career should one choose not to attend the Christmas party, then one's boss should be kicked repeatedly in the groin - it even hurts females - repeatedly until one's boss understands that politics in the workplace is for cowards and sycophants.
And I agree with realtall - there are several co-workers that, in the words of a song by The Smiths - "why do I spend valuable time with people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?"

building rapport with your superiors includes
making them your social equals, but not too close.
It's a significant part of politics to get every inch out of every relationship, because one never knows which relationship will deliver.

Well, according to Mike, I have to leave my kid at home, dress up, put on make-up, make chit-chat with people I have nothing in common with, and pretend to blend in as a trophy wife.
I'm getting close to the 30 year mark. I think I'm too old to be a trophy wife. |

emphasis on little
some of our gals put on more makeup than the street walkers of Hollywood and Vine.
The natural look, the surfer babe look is much better than the painted look.

I haven't really worn make-up since my wedding 6 years ago. When I do, I feel like people stare more at the make-up than at my face. |
