The tolerance of my homosexual friends
I went to lunch yesterday with two office mates, both of whom are good friends and both of whom are gay. Their acceptance of me with my faith during this season of Prop. 8 has been something that I deeply appreciate and respect. They know my church, and they know that it has been one of the driving forces behind the taking away of rights they care most about. In fact, one of them was married in California (to a well-respected NPR correspondent whose identity I won't reveal). Their marriage is now in doubt. We talk about Prop. 8. They are deeply disappointed. I was in the position of lifting their spirits, telling them it is just a dream deferred. 2012, 2016, or 2020, at latest, in my opinion. Prop. 8's shelf life will be short lived. But I felt like a phony acting the cheerleader. This is an issue where they have allowed me to be conflicted. Tolerant attitudes like theirs are what will switch the hearts of the necessary 3%.

Do you disagree that when those who support gay marriage show tolerance and understanding for the conflicted middle that it won't act as a persuasive force in favor of gay marriage?

Just checking how conflicted you can be if you either agree or disagree with the POTF.

Thanks, Jeff.
exUte -- The fact that you leave no room for understanding or sympathy will ultimately doom your cause. Also, try to hold these two thoughts in your head: (1) Belief in the Family Proclamation; (2) Belief that in a pluralistic, democratic society, there is room for gay marriage. It is possible to hold both, just like it is possible to (1) abhor abortion, but (2) believe that in an agency-based society, women should have the choice.
