Default Chris Cooley on Rookie Salaries

This is a very good read. A well thought out commentary on rookie salaries in the NFL. Worth checking out.

It seems to me that the problem is that the owners are willing to pay outrageous bonuses in order to get a rookie to sign a contract. Because the contracts are not guaranteed, the players can basically tell the team that drafted them to give them a huge amount of money before they'll even think about signing the contract.

I say if the veteran players want a change, they ought to get their players reps to go to the owners and tell them to stop paying bonuses on the front end and make the player earn a big bonus to get after their contract expires.

Either that or convince the owners to drop the hard cap and go with something like the NBA has.

You're right...it is an owner/agent issue.

From other things I've read, the NFLPA doesn't have a problem with the rookie salaries...but I just can't believe that to be the case. It will be interesting to see if Goddell can pull of a rookie salary cap.

This is a good read. I can see where Cooley is coming from and I bet that 80% of the players in the NFL feel the same way.

The other 20% signed huge rookie contracts.

I like the NBA's way of doing it. Rookie contracts were getting WAY out of hand in the NBA. I like how they do it, although I think the NFL would need to increase the amount that is guaranteed as NFL players have a MUCH shorter career length on average.

I like Cooley. He's a player. On and off the field.

That is why I put it at 80%. There are a few people over the past 3 or 4 years just chillin and loving what the received as rookies.
