The LDS work-trips to New Orleans
now that time has passed, what have been the long-term effects if any?
precedent of short-term work missions? favorable impressions of Mormons by residents in N.O.? increased faith of those members who served? I didn't make my ward's trip, which I feel a little guilty about, but sometimes the ox is in the mire. |

I went on one of them. I think there were long-term benefits in the friendship and unity of those who went, and I know it really helped one of the YM who went a lot.
As for the the people down there, I don't know what, if any long term benefits there were, but what they were most in need of at that time were short-term benefits, and we certainly provided many of those. Longer term effects would not surprise me. I was one team among hundreds (or thousands). We interacted with a lot of people, all of those were favorable. Included were a few significant events. For example, we had a doctor with us in our group. We ran into one woman who had a young child with some medical needs, who had not been able to get medical attention. The doctor in our group took care of the kid, to the mother's deep gratitude. We had another situation where we provided some service to some folks who gave us a couple of hundred dollars to be donated in tithing. Each day we were there, we had a list of houses to go take care of, but the best times were when we were just driving between places, saw someone who looked in need, and went over to offer assistance. We were not once rebuffed, these people were really in dire straits. I think it was well worth it. |
