Default Fear and love

1 John 4:18

Alternate versions of this scripture could help lead legalist Mormons out of the fear/punishment paradigm.

KJV
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

ESV
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

NIV
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

CEV
A real love for others will chase those worries away. The thought of being punished is what makes us afraid. It shows that we have not really learned to love.

The Message 17,18
God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we're free of worry on Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical with Christ's. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love.

20th Century
There is no fear in love. No! Love, when perfect, drives out fear, for fear implies punishment, and the man who feels fear has not attained to perfect love.

Good find, Jay. It's good to see you examining different translations.

I'm no intellectual.

I like reading Stephen Robinson Following Christ kind of material. And there are a few Christian authors that write the same stuff. Light weight stuff for this group as far as intellectual value. But heavyweight as far as I'm concerned when it comes to ideas. Ragamuffin Gospel is the book I'm reading now.

I came across the verse there but didn't recognize it. The KJV "torment" word didn't give me the same meaning.
