You're not trying to talk about cycling in the cycling forum, again, are you?

Yes, I thought I better do it while I can, before the forum is overrun, so to speak, by Phil Knight acolytes.

I nominate this thread as "best title" of 2007.

It's looks bad but I still think he was clean. I still believe the samples were messed with in the lab. Eight American victories in a row was just to many for the French.

Agreed. The tampering is too obvious and the leaks about lab results seem to confirm the dishonesty of the French labs.

I wish I could say that I shared the opinion that he was clean. As you know, what happened is the A samples were not positive, but were only tested on the epitestosterone/testosterone ratio. They then tested the B samples for exogenous testosterone and found several of them were positive. This sets up a pretty clear choice. Either Landis cheated or someone else spiked his samples. There is really no middle ground. Like Arch, I find the way this has been handled by the French to be very questionable and despicable, but it would be a pretty remarkable thing for so many samples to be spiked like this. OTOH, it is hard to believe that Landis would be acting the way he is (traveling around soliciting money for his defense) if he knew that he had cheated, which he would have to know if he had cheated in the way that these results seem to show. IOW, as before, I am just not sure what to think. Bottom line, he is not racing this year, and may not again.

Over on espn.com there is a short video interview with him. He is adament that he is innocent and that the samples were tainted. He also flat out says that one or more of the involved organizations are "out to get him", although I can't remember which one he named directly. I'm glad that he is talking a little more about his innocence rather than flawed tests and breaches in confidentialty. It definitely does more to reassure what little hope there is in me that he is innocent.
I've always said that I'm more interested in the tests results rather than whether protocols were followed or not. Sure, the protocols are there to protect the integrity of the test, but someone getting cleared from charges due to a flaw in the system really chaps my hide. I like Basso a lot as a rider, but if he isn't allowed to ride the Tour this year it wouldn't break my heart. Same goes for all of the Puerto riders. |
