The thing that is becoming apparent about Mendenhall
is that what we see is what we get. He's not going to be able to take BYU any further than he already has.
The question is whether that is good enough. A lot of programs face similar dilemmas. They have a good coach who has done some very good, notable things. But has never punched through to the next level, almost never wins games he is not supposed to. We know what people think of Bronco in terms of the demand for him as a coach elsewhere at bigger programs. There is no demand. One could argue that recruiting at BYU is a static proposition. It's hard to recruit worse, but it's also hard to recruit better. You could say that the defense has been mostly very good this year. But the offense has left a lot to be desired for a long time. We are now the historical quarterback U. We now appear to be one of the teams that can't pass well, instead of being the program that practically invented the forward pass. We've frankly lost our identity. We don't have a conference. We merely play for pride. Things could feel a lot different if BYU beats Notre Dame. But who here has confidence that will happen. BYU always seems to find a way to lose. |
