There's got to be some out there, I've seen some big dudes riding centuries. Anyway, the shorts hold the twig and berries in place tightly whilst the spandex is able to glide to and fro over the seat without much friction. Without the shorts you've got friction from the seat and from the shorts and by the end of the ride it feels like your seat was a cheese grater. But, I guess you already know that now.
