It's a market situation. It is relativaly easy to get youth to get ripped apart in Iraq, and not so easy to get somebody that can a fill basketball arena. Thus they don't have to pay soldiers much. In fact the army gives very small inlistment and re-up bonuses for fighting soldiers compared to techies. Our society puts a higher value on the sports hero then we do for the real hero.

I am against any kind of government subsidies for sports, or any other kind of business. But I am in a very small minority on this point.
