It's just that in the west, we value freedom of speech in all its forms. When someone suffers because he or she wrote a book, then it makes us upset, and it makes the author earn respect.
So Khomeini is responsible for making Rushdie famous and respectable.

I don't think that is true. One of his books that preceded "The Satanic Verses" was well received and won awards.
But certainly, the fact that he is a household name (among the college educated) is the result of the fatwah.
