My infamous accident that resulted in two titanium plates and ten screws being added to my right radius and ulna occured at mile 42 of my son's (and two friends') 50 miler. At mile 35 or so, we took a water and Gu break, and I instructed the boys that in the later parts of a long ride, one had a tendency to get a little careless, so it was important to watch their line, stay alert and finish strong. Seven miles later, disaster, due to a total brain freeze on my part. As I was being driven off to three hours of surgery, one of the boys said, "Wow, that was like the best lesson ever."
