Even one who's not the world's most intrepid camper must ackowledge that there is meaning and value to be gained by a certain type of person from camping, and in any event your kids will be better off if he acquires rudimentary camping skills come what may. See McCarthy's The Road. I find comments such as "we're not campers" or "we're not good at math," etc. extremely limiting, even damaging to children.
