Is there a purpose in trying to make Church members insular?

Church members are often very nationalistic, which is a tendency Trump tuned into. That may be why he still carried Utah despite cognitive dissonance over his lifestyle.

Older leadership hates gays, instructs how we dress, forbids beards, punishes kids who have sex and promote MLMs.

Younger members are part of the world and accept people for who they are, are trying to figure themselves out, but think for themselves.

Here is a quote from an active member, my niece:

Quote:
My heart has been so, so heavy these past two days, but not really because Trump was elected. I could never vote for him for the very obvious reasons that so many people are talking about, and I was definitely incredulous as I watched his numbers creep higher and higher. But I feel so heavy and so sad because I'm realizing we have completely lost the ability as a society to look at things from multiple points of view, and I worry that losing that will destroy us, and I mean that very literally. The fear people feel right now is entirely justified, as well as the anger, the disgust, and the shock. The things some people are saying and doing to intimidate marginalized members of our society are reprehensible and 100% not okay, and we absolutely must defend and protect those who have so much to fear right now. And I, as a privileged white Christian, obviously have no idea what all these feelings actually feel like and have no right to pontificate on how people should be feeling, and I wouldn't want to do that.
Obviously there are many views in any culture, but her thoughts seem to reflect how younger people in the Church believe and feel. It just really seems the Ivory Tower in SLC doesn't get it any more.

There are two groups, the isolated leaders with no contact to reality and the rest of the members, young and middle aged.
