It is prudent to remember when looking at these numbers that this is still the government we're talking about. They can cook the books with the best of them.

The situation in Iraq is improved, that's true. But the frontline is still a war of attrition, and if you ask the guys who are there caught in the midst of urban warfare, they'll tell you it's hard to tell who's winning.

Personally, I'm wary of ever accepting the media's dumbed down interpretation of the war, regardless of whether the latest trendy headline is one of doom and gloom (2001-6) or one of success (2007-8).
