Rushdie is receiving awards because people tried to kill him over something he wrote. We wouldn't even know his name if Khomeini hadn't made him famous.
And probably no one would care about his book, either.
It's just that in the west, we value freedom of speech in all its forms. When someone suffers because he or she wrote a book, then it makes us upset, and it makes the author earn respect.
So Khomeini is responsible for making Rushdie famous and respectable.
