It's just that in the west, we value freedom of speech in all its forms. When someone suffers because he or she wrote a book, then it makes us upset, and it makes the author earn respect.
So Khomeini is responsible for making Rushdie famous and respectable.

i beleive there are huge reports of that he had been receiving rewards befor he made his absolutel honorabl/voluntary decision to live in fear !
