Not sure I agree. DI caliber basketball talent in the state of Utah seems to me to be proportionately more rare than football. When BYU basketball is thriving BYU always has the edge with kids from practicing LDS families. Utah can only combat that with superior success. Local players haven't been the best basketball Utes, but they have been indispensable and formed a significant percentage of the best basketball Utes. Virtually all of these have been LDS.
