Who offered it as an excuse?
Fans are fans, because some, many or most live vicariously through the actions of others. Why? Because their own lives are insufferable dull, useless and mundane. So they look for entertainment.
Others look to the arts for "enlightenment". Some of the typically blue collar mentality look to the rough and tumble of sporting events. It's simply a diversion.
And no, I wouldn't want most people beside me on the field of battle, only somebody battle hardened and reliable, some couch potato or author or anybody else.
I wouldn't read too much in to guys letting it hang out except for the extremes.
