Default The passing of the great Statman

With the coming game against USC in Provo, I again am reminded of Statman's passing, which I did not know of until just over a week ago. I note below that the only other time USC played in Provo, he gifted me a ticket to the game.

I wrote up a short note on CB about it:

Somehow I missed the news of Statman’s passing in 2017. I just found out last night as I was looking at the CBers in the cloud feature.

I think it was early in the 00’s that I made his acquaintance on CB. It turned out that he lived in Fort Worth. I lived in Dallas. He invited me to come over and watch BYU football games at his house.

He was very gracious, generous, and just a cool guy. Married to a great woman. And with two young sons at that time.

The first time I came over for a game, his mother-in-law was the only one home, and she didn’t open the door. She thought I looked suspicious. He laughed about that. Later on, we and our wives had dinner together at a German restaurant in the Dallas area.

Eventually he moved away from Fort Worth. For the USC game in Provo years ago, he told me to come on up and he had a free ticket for me. I did so. That’s a great memory (although we lost the game).

We lost touch for a long time, as I was taking a kind of hiatus from CB and apparently so was he.

We reconnected in 2015, via email. I sought his advice on some personal matters related to his own life’s experience, which I knew he had also been through. Again, he was so thoughtful and gracious.

Statman - you were one of the best. I miss you already. God speed.
