They have talked about getting rid of DRM, but, I believe, haven't yet. If you have an iPod, the DRM isn't really an issue. Also, you can convert any song you download on iTunes to a normal mp3 and transfer it to any player without much of a problem.
Plus, if you want the option of owning your music, rather than the Napster model, you really don't have any other decent legal options, that I am aware of.
