Bill CLinton? You did not think he was moderate? He coopted half the Republicans platform which is one of the reasons he was so reviled by them.

Also, you did not notice that for 28 of the last 40 years we have had Republican presidents? The public has clearly moved to the right, especially in the last 30 years.
