The vast majority of the time the game isn't decided at the plate in the bottom of the 13th inning on a call by the umpire, but by the players throughout the game. Had this same Halliday who benefited from the call at the end not overplayed a fly ball, the Padres would not have scored the tying run in the late innings of regulation and it would not have gone extra innings. So the human element was there again.
