Thursday night, on HBO, "Addiction"

HBO is starting a 14 part documentary about Addiction.

The first episode on Thurs. night starts in the Parkland ER (Dallas) where I have spent many a day and night.

Might be worth TIVOing, as I'm sure we will all be focusing on the BYU game.

From their website:

"People who are addicted cannot control their need for alcohol or other drugs, even in the face of negative health, social or legal consequences.

The illness becomes harder to treat and the related health problems, such as organ disease, become worse. "

They are obviously talking about substance abuse problems, but do these facts hold up with other recognized addictions, i.e. gambling, CG, sex etc?

In the end, isn't all about an addiction to dopamine, no matter the practice which creates or substitutes it in our heads?

in the case of cocaine and meth, they cause physiologic release of dopamine. Meaning the the chemical interacts directly with dopamine releasing neurons.

Behavior (i.e. gambling) would work in more indirect methods.
