Is the "Mormon Moment" overrated?

I've not sensed any uptick in interest in Mormonism among my friends and colleagues.

I guess that could change if Obama pulls the religion card and decides to make the election a referendum on Mormonism (which I think would be a stupid, desperate move).

Assuming that doesn't happen, I'm not sure Americans really think it's that important of a subject.

I was a stateside missionary during the 2002 winter olympic games in SLC. We were told that there was going to be a major upswing of interest in Mormonism after the opening ceremonies and throughout the games.

There wasn't.

I think it was just something Utahns told each other to make themselves feel important. Kind of the same way that they claim the Holy War is one of the top five rivalry games with national interest. Truth is, if you don't live in Utah, you tend to forget that the two teams are even playing each other.

No, I don't think the BYU/Utah rivalry holds a lot of sway nationally.

Utahns, if you don't know already, there is a whole other world out there, that is a lot bigger and faster than yours.

I do have one colleague who seems to have an increased interest. Most recently asked me about my underwear. . .
