An Act of integrity

Perhaps stories such as this do nothing for you, but they help me:

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. ยป A New York City cab driver is being praised for returning over $21,000 lost by a visitor from Italy.
Felicia Lettieri, who's 72, left her purse in a Manhattan taxi on Christmas Eve. It contained traveling money for her and six relatives.
Police told them not to get their hopes up about finding it.
The cabbie drove about 50 miles, to a Long Island address he'd found in the purse. No one was home, so he left his phone number, and later returned with the money.
Lettieri's daughter, Maria Rosaria Falonga, told Newsday from Pompei, Italy that the cabbie also left a note.
He told her: "Don't worry, Felicia. ... I'll keep it safe."
The driver, Mukul Asaduzzaman, could not be reached for comment.
He refused a reward.

To the remaining members of CG, this is preaching to the choir.

Integrity, an old-fashioned concept.

Thanks for sharing. That is an inspiring story and, unfortunately, a rarity today.

My wife lost her purse about a month ago. Fortunately, someone was kind enough to return it. Minus the wallet, cash, credit cards. That is what one has come to expect nowadays.

When I worked in an office, I found a wallet in the restroom. I looked through it for an ID and noticed there was no cash, and that made me afraid to return it, so I left it there.

We live by fear today. I'm certain I have as well, but alas when we who know better live by fear ....

That is unfortunate. It is disappointing that fear controls the possibility of doing a good deed. The possibility of being accused of stealing money that was never there is disheartening. This is the measure we have come to expect.

More on the story from the BBC:

Quote:

A gracious Asadujjaman was quoted by the newspaper as saying that he may be broke, but he was also honest.
"My mother is my inspiration. She always said to be honest and work hard."
Mr Asadujjaman called a friend with a car and drove to a Long Island address he found in the handbag.
No-one was at home, so he left his phone number and a note, the report said.
His phone rang a short time later and he drove back to return the bag.
"They were so, so, so happy," Mr Asadujjaman told the paper.
Asked if he was tempted to keep the cash, Mr Asadujjaman said the money would have allowed him more time to study, "but my heart said this is not good".
He also turned down a reward, saying he could not accept it as a devout Muslim, Newsday reported.
"I'm needy, but I'm not greedy," he said. "It's better to be honest."
Amazing. Somebody borrowed a car to drive fifty miles in order to return the money, only to not find the person home. And then he kept the money safe.

I saw this on the news.

He credited his honesty to the teachings of his mother when he was a young boy.

Stripling Warrior of sorts, I suppose.
