this is great news. I had heard earlier that the plan cost more than expected, but I guess not.

I was wondering the same thing. Last I heard the program was $300m over budget. I thought it was a curious omission that the article didn't address the solvency of the program, other than saying the state is in negotiation with the feds as to whether they'll continue supporting the program.

The plan saved $68M over 3 months on ER expenses. That's $272M/year. They're asking the feds for $11B for three years ($3.67B/year).

So they're saving $272M and asking for $3.67B? They should tell us how much of the $3.67B goes to just the health insurance program. Otherwise, how do we know they're saving money?

Is using ER expenses a valid metric against government assistance?

no but that's the only savings the article provides.

Exactly what I was wondering.

I also can't help but wonder if the positive press coverage of Romney's achievement might be tied to a certain announcement expected later this week.

lol! Yeah, you have to be suspicious of the media. They've always been in the tank for Romney.

That's not what I meant. The two campaigns have enormous control over the media. They literally negotiate the headlines each morning. If McCain's already made his decision, he's behind the scenes trying to set up positive publicity for Romney heading into the announcement.

Am I making any sense? I honestly never know. Flash says there are too many 80s pop lyrics interfering with my thoughts.

Flash may be right, especially if those 80's pop lyrics are regarding Obama - "I just can't get enough; just can't get enough." ;)

The media still loves Obama despite his obvious flaws - lack of experience, arrogance, etc. I believe the NY Times itself has admitted that it has run more positive articles about Obama than McCain.
