what are "referrals"?

i click on some user profiles and see they they have a certain amount of "referrals".. what does that mean, and how does one do it?

It's how many people you referred to join CG. The more you get, the quicker you can become a Cool Guy.

i think when people sign up they can list a user that referred them.

I have zero referrals in my profile which must be some form of a mistake, since I'm assuming most people come to this site to experience my awesomeness.

Basking in the awesomeness and mind blowing niftyness of mpfunk is the only reason I get on the web at all. As a matter of fact, I've heard that you don't need to see the sun for years if you look at a picture of funk because it will give you all of the happiness and warmth you'll need for about a decade.
