Which colleges then?

From the criteria used, I think it's pretty clear that this is an undergrad survey. Does anyone really think BYU would be in the top 100 if it included research?

The College of Humanities?

That's the impression I got from the survey. Princeton has the best college of Humanities in the country. BYU ranks in at 79. Ahh the memories of the JKHB. Strange that USNews would completely ignore all the other colleges that a University may have when doing this study/ranking.

Either that, or they use the term "college" and "university" interchangeably in the article...

Uh, correction. This is a ranking for undergraduate programs. As the list says, 79th best "college." Do you know the difference? The listing is also heavily weighted toward admission standards. I think this is as it should be but state law essentially disqualifies Utah from competing on these lists. Utah should establish competitive admissions standards like most of its peers do.

None of us (or few) went to BYU for grad school and you didn't go to Utah for yours. So why would anything besides undergrad programs matter to anyone here?

My main point is that this list is mostly a creature of how hard it is to get into a college. That's the way these rankings are usually made, and I think that's probably fair. But by sate law Utah doesn't presently have competitive admissions standards so there is a segment of its studentbody that drives its numbers down. Utah disqualifies itself from shining on any undergraduate ranking. But the cream at Utah and the cream at BYU are similar in quality. By the way, Utah will eventually have to limit admissions and I understand it is moving that way already.

Well Cal Tech is the most selective college around but I don't think of it in terms of a College of Humanities, not that they are weak, but that's not why one attends Cal Tech.

SU is correct. USN&WR rankings break down into a bunch of different categories. This is the ranking of undergraduate programs for national universities. My son was choosing schools at this time last year and we spent far too much time looking at this and other rankings trying to figure things out so I am quite certain about this.
