Are you fatter than average?

The average waistline for men in America is 39 inches. For women it is 37 inches.

Is your waistline larger than that?

Archaea 06-24-2008 03:03 PM

You must be very, very large to have a 39 inch waiste.

I would imagine average is about a 35 inch.

Ha. Farrah showed up to a ward group playdate when she was pregnant with a maternity suit (at a spray park). The funny thing was that another woman, not pregnant, showed up wearing the exact same maternity suit.

She has a medical condition though, so I will cut her some slack.

It is disturbing to think about. but you are in great shape and spend a lot of time with people that also training. Next time to go to the store, just take the time to look at the people around you. Obesity is a big problem in America.

I didn't realize those were people, I thought they were food silos.

I was a 40 before I started losing weight.

I'm at a 36.

When I had 7% body fat I had a 34 inch waist. 35 is not that fat unless you are a shrimp. At 6'2" 200lbs with 7% body fat I was wearing 34 jeans.

TripletDaddy 06-24-2008 04:46 PM

No.

at that size you are far bigger than the average man.

The average man is about 5'11" and 170 pounds. For him a 35 is fat.

That's true I was just being mean spirited with the "shrimp" comment.

Coach McGuirk 06-24-2008 05:55 PM

I am 6'5" and currently weigh 258. I have a 38 inch waist and in no way do I consider myself in shape. I have another 48 pounds to lose to hit my target and I would suspect I will be a 33-34.

I am in awe at our obesity. With an average height of 5'10" and a average waist of 39. that is one fat society.

Zulu451 06-24-2008 06:10 PM

What is even more amazing is seeing all of the fat from the inside. That is some serious cheeseburgerage

Sea Chicken 06-24-2008 06:10 PM

I'm a 5'8" shrimp. I wore 36 jeans at my fattest. Now I wear 30 - 32.

SteelBlue 06-24-2008 07:22 PM

Here's what Japan is doing to combat obesity in a country where obesity doesn't exist. Can you imagine a public health project like this in the States? There'd be riots. Especially if 33.5" was the Men's standard.

To reach its goals of shrinking the overweight population by 10 percent over the next four years and 25 percent over the next seven years, the government will impose financial penalties on companies and local governments that fail to meet specific targets. The country’s Ministry of Health argues that the campaign will keep the spread of diseases like diabetes and strokes in check.

most of that fat is just globs of yellow attached to the intestines. belly full of fat.

Yikes, I am down to 167 from a lifetime high of around 195.

Don't sweat it. I by no means am imposing as a figure but take it in stride. Unfortunately I am reminded that my memory is only the second smallest part of me.

We are probably similar in frame size. I think I would have to be disease stricken to get below 200 lbs. I am currently working on getting back into the 225 range which for me is about a 38 in waist and very healthy/solid.

marsupial 06-24-2008 11:17 PM

We don't need to discuss my waistline right now, but I will say that my fundal height is right on target :)

Seeing that I'm not a lumberjack but a wolf, it's hard for me to identify with such dimensions. I was trying to say fox, but they're too scrawny in my mind.

working on getting back to 225? From where? Jupiter?

For those that have been or are hefty, how did it come about? Have you always been on the large side or did it happen later in life? MTC? Mission? College? Sympathy weight during pregnancies?

I've never really struggled with weight, as I am currently the same weight that I was in High School. So I am always curious to hear how the weight crept on.

One of my good friends who I ride bikes with was 6 feet, 150 pounds when he was married at 25. He was racing bikes competitively for several years after his mission. 20 years later, he topped out at 300 pounds before getting back in shape. He is now down to 225 and steadily dropping. For him, it was parenthood, his first few jobs out of school and no buddies to ride with for motivation.

That's a great question and it would be interesting to hear the answers. For those of us with some good genes, it smacks of indifference to make derisive comments. I have an employee who eats like a horse, but due to genetic make up doesn't gain weight.

MikeWaters 06-25-2008 03:34 PM

exercise and eating healthy food are the province of the well-off.

This is my category. I dont really gain much weight, no matter what or how much I eat.

When I was a teen, it bothered me because I really wanted to gain weight. Nothing helped much...the protein shakes, creatine, etc...

Now that I am in my 30s, I feel really lucky about the whole thing. I have friends and co-workers who are younger than me who have been or are on diets, can't eat certain foods, etc, but I am really lucky in that sense.

Technicaly, there are a few foods I avoid, but not for weight reasons....more for either allergic reasons or "that food is disgusting" reasons.

I'm 6'2" and wear a 38 waist, and currently weigh about 230 lbs. I'm actually probably a 37 waist as 36s are a bit too tight, and 38s are a bit baggy, so I go with the 38 for comfort sake. The biggest I've been was 260, and my ideal is in the 200-210 range. I'm about halfway there. I actually carry my weight fairly well, and while I'm overweight and working at it, I by no means look obese for a guy who is as big as I am. (I guess by no means am I obese either).

I gained most of my weight in college, going from 185 up to about 230 while working with the football team at the Y. They fed us like the players, but we weren't even close to physically working like the players, and I bulked up quite a bit (and not in a good way). Add to it a knee injury, sympathy pregnancy weight, genetics and starting a desk job, and I went from 230 in school to the 250-260 range. I really enjoy working out and wish I could do it more. The hardest thing for me is finding the time to do it, since I hate getting up early and feel an obligation to spend time with wife/kids, and finding somebody to lift weights with so I push myself enough.

Your BMI is close to the 90th percentile.

Btw, I think the more interesting figure would be the median waist size in america, not the average.

BMI is an overrated system IMO. Yes, I need to lose weight. But if I weigh in at 210, a healthy weight for me, my BMI is still high.

Look at a guy like Bryan Kehl (6'3" 240 lbs). According to BMI, he's fat, but looking at him, he's ripped and a physical specimen. I'm not Bryan Kehl, but I'm not a fattie either.

MikeWaters 06-25-2008 05:02 PM

My high was 195+, and on the scale yesterday I was 167.

No one would have called me fat at 195. But looking back, yes, I was fat.

I was very active pre-marriage. Surfing, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Snow Boarding, Basketball, you name it. In my high school years till I was married at 22 I was never out of top shape let alone fat. About 2 months before my marriage, I tore my ACL. Being married and trying to recover from the ACL, I packed on some pounds. When I left high school I weight 210, when I married I was 215. about 6 months (1995) into my marriage I weighed 240. Since then it was pretty steady at 240 until I switched carreers (2005) and found myself behind a desk all day long. In the past 3 years I ballooned to just shy of 300 pounds. I carry the weight decently, so I never heard I was looking bad but I knew it. But last year, after years of flirting with it, resolved to get back to high school weight.

So, to answer the question, for me it was a combination of Marriage, Desk job and injury.

SteelBlue 06-25-2008 07:24 PM

All those of you who are using the waist size of your jeans to determine your waist size might be in for a shocker. It is my opinion that American clothing makers lie a great deal about the waist size to make the consumer feel better about him/herself and more likely to buy their brand of jeans.

I wear size 34 jeans comfortably but on a recent suit buying expedition I was measured by a tailor who informed me that I was a 36. I saw the tape with my own eyes. I went home and tried on some of my old 36 waist jeans and they were baggy as can be. The sad truth for many of you may be just a tape measure away. Try it and see. It seems to me that the size listed is actually one size larger. So a comfortable pair of 36 is likely a true 38.
