The case for religious freedom
 

We're hearing a lot from the GAs about the need for religious freedom, and how religious freedom is under attack. Particularly by the competing right of nondiscrimination and equal treatment under the law.

And so a lot of the conversation is about protecting our rights, and falling back on the constitution, and a need for "mutual respect."

Mm'kay.

How about winning respect. Earning respect. How about convincing our fellow citizens that are are good people trying to do the right thing.

One gets the feeling that the church is perfectly willing to guarantee rights for gays in ALL arenas EXCEPT for when it applies to the church. Isn't that what the state law in Utah was about?

It tires me out. It's getting to the point where I feel like I don't even have the energy to talk or think or care about this.

The Church will get as much respect as the Neo-Nazis in Skokie, IL got. That's all they deserve under the Constitution. There's no Constitutional right to respect.

That law DID get respect, from Human Rights campaign, Utah Pride, and Jonathan Rauch, a gay academic at Brookings.

I know that. What I am saying is that the church values its ability to discriminate against gays to such a degree that they are willing to cave on all other gay-related issues in order to preserve that.

What's wrong with that? It shows that the Church's main concern is to maximize its own power to do what it wants, not to screw gays for the purpose of screwing gays.

I guess that's ok, if you think that eternal life is forfeit for most gays.

and btw, the church is still fighting against gay marriage globally.
